The Award
On 24 February 2024, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) recognized KAMEL — Knowledge Aware Medical Entity Linkage — with the IAAI Deployed Application Award at the Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence conference. The award honors AI applications that have moved beyond the lab into sustained, real-world production use — with measurable impact.
Why This Award Matters
The IAAI Deployed Application Award is one of the field's longest-standing recognitions for applied AI. It is not given for prototypes or benchmarks — it requires evidence of an AI system operating in production, at scale, delivering value over time. For insurance leaders evaluating AI vendors, it is a rare independent signal that a system works outside the demo room.
What Was Recognized
Health insurance policies write their exclusions in free text — a clause like "respiratory illnesses excluded due to a pre-existing asthma condition" — while incoming claims carry their diagnoses as standardized ICD-10CM codes. KAMEL links the two, pairing medical ontologies with language models so a system can judge whether a claim falls under a policy's exclusions automatically — the linkage that lets health claims move toward straight-through processing (STP). The award recognizes that framework holding up on real-world claims data, not just in benchmarks.
Deployed, Not a Demo
The IAAI Deployed Application Award requires evidence of sustained production use. KAMEL earned it operating inside real claims workflows — the kind of proof no benchmark can substitute for.
Knowledge-Aware by Design
Grounding entity linkage in curated medical knowledge is what makes its outputs explainable and auditable — the property insurers need from any AI that touches claims decisions.
The Foundation of Hepha AI
The KAMEL research inspired the Medical Knowledge Graph at the core of Hepha AI's claims solution, and its authors — and the professors behind the research — work closely with our team today. Alongside that research lineage, our founding engineers bring the operating experience of having built a highly customized claims-automation solution that at its peak processed over half of Singapore's Integrated MediShield claims.
